Evidence for Creation — In Common Sense
When discussing creation versus evolution, sometimes the simple arguments can be extremely powerful. To be sure, science supports creation no matter how technical we get. However, common sense overwhelmingly supports creation and provides compelling evidence to scientists and non-scientists alike.
Before we get started, let’s define our terms. By evolution, we mean the belief that all life arose naturally by Darwinian means (without God), and that the universe was not created by God. Evolution can be defined in so many different ways, but this definition is what most people really mean when they use the word in a creation/evolution context.
Evidence #1: Incredible designs mean an incredible Designer
Did you know that so many designs in nature are incredible? They are more complex than our best man-made inventions. With all our technology, we cannot create a living bumblebee from scratch. Now suppose that you walked up to the Space Shuttle and stood there, staring at it, wondering if it got here over millions of years of chance random processes filtered by natural selection. People would think you were crazy, and the host of engineers, mathematicians, and scientists who had a part in its design would be insulted. Of course the Space Shuttle is not the result of millions of years of chance. It is the result of the combined efforts of some of the most brilliant men in the world.
Likewise, when evolutionists wonder whether life could have evolved, they are insulting its Designer–God. As incredible as the Space Shuttle is, God’s creation–life–is so much more incredible. If we are honest with ourselves, to say life evolved is ridiculous. It also insults life’s designer, Jesus Christ.
Evidence #2: Things tend to get worse, not better
Does your living room tend to get messier or neater over time? We all know the answer to that–messier, hands down. We need to make conscious efforts to pick up the clutter, wipe the dust off the furniture, sweep up the dust, and clean the windows. Left to itself for a month, the living room would become a dump. Life works that way. We have to constantly apply effort just to keep things from getting worse. To create something new, we have to apply even more effort.
Why do we assume that evolution is above the law? Why do we say that over millions of years life became better and better, when all we ever observe is things getting worse and worse unless we apply our intelligence to fix it? This is unreasonable.
Evidence #3: Life’s more than just ‘things’
What have been the most meaningful moments of your life? Who are the people you love most? What do you think about yourself–do you have emotions, feelings, and a soul?
If evolution is true, then all of this is just an illusion. Your brain is just the result of chemical reactions and electrical signals, and that’s it. If evolution is true, then you are just a very complex arrangement of matter that evolved over millions of years. There would be no life after death, no true morality, no God, and no soul. Is this reasonable? Are you really willing to believe the logical conclusion of evolution?
Some evolutionists respond by saying, “Tough. We need to face the facts, wherever they may lead.” But if evolution leads to something that we know in our hearts is not true, even absurd, then we know that evolution cannot be true, either. If we are honest, evolution is a gross devaluing of human life. Of course we are more than just matter and chemicals. We do have a soul, life is meaningful, and life is more than just “things.” These are not just illusions. This is powerful evidence that a supernatural realm does indeed exist–a realm that transcends physical matter and chemicals.
Sadly, sin has a spiritually numbing effect. Those who continue in sin increasingly lose touch with reality–especially spiritual reality. If God is working in your heart, do not resist, because the longer you resist, the more spiritually numbed you will become, and the less chance you will have of coming to Christ.
Evidence #4: You have a free will
That’s right–you have the ability to decide. This is such a simple concept, but it is really a powerful argument against evolution.
Let’s illustrate with an example. Have you ever seen those 5th-grade volcano science projects? You place baking soda and red food coloring into the center of the volcano, and then pour vinegar on top, and a chemical reaction causes a red bubbling liquid to pour over the side of the volcano. You can mix baking soda and vinegar a hundred times, and a hundred times they will do the same thing. Baking soda and vinegar have no choice in the matter. Likewise, if you are just an extremely complicated arrangement of chemicals, then your decisions are just extremely complicated chemical reactions, shaped by evolution and your environment. You have no more free will than baking soda and vinegar do.
Is this reasonable? No, of course not. Of course we have the freedom to decide. Ironically, evolutionists often claim to be free thinkers, but if evolution is true, then no one is really a free thinker. Everyone believes what nature tells him to. If evolution is true, then even Christians are just believing what nature tells them to, and so why should evolutionists get angry? The fact is, their anger and hatred demonstrates that they do indeed have a soul and a free will. This is evidence for creation and against evolution.
Conclusion
Although common sense disproves evolution, many people continue to cling to it because it provides the best excuse they can think of for rejecting their responsibility to their Creator, Jesus Christ. However, ignoring the truth does not make it go away. One day each of us will stand before Christ and give an account for our lives. It is my hope that you will find eternal life through Jesus Christ through trust and belief in Him and repentance of your sins.
