"Will the godly suffer persecution?" (Alleged Contradiction #E5488)
When a man’s ways please the LORD, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him.
Proverbs 16:7
Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
II Timothy 3:12
Response
-
Proverbs never says that all the man’s enemies are always at peace with him. On the contrary, the verse actually implies that at one time, the enemies were hostile toward this godly man; otherwise, how could they be “made” to be peaceful? Thus, Proverbs is teaching that some of this man’s own enemies are surprisingly at peace with him, but not all the time, and not all enemies.
- Persecution does not always come from personal enemies; it may come from a government or strangers who hate Christ.
