"When (at what time of day) was Jesus crucified?" (Alleged Contradiction #E4813)
And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!
John 19:14
And it was the third hour, and they crucified him.
Mark 15:25
And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
Mark 15:33-34
Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
Matthew 27:45-46
And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.
Luke 23:44
When (at what time of day) was Jesus crucified?
Response
Here is the order of events:
-
6am: Pilate says, “Behold your King!” (John 19:14, “sixth hour” Roman time, counted from midnight)
- 9am: Jesus is crucified. (Mark 15:25, “third hour” Jewish time, counted from sunrise)
- 12pm-3pm: Darkness over the whole land (Mark 15:33-34, Matthew 27:45-46, Luke 23:44, “sixth hour” to “ninth hour,” Jewish time, counted from sunrise)
Jewish time started the day at sunrise (6am), whereas Roman time started the day at midnight (12am). So the “sixth hour” Roman time is 6am, but the “third hour” Jewish time is 9am.
