"Did Saul inquire of the Lord?" (Alleged Contradiction #E4171)
And when Saul saw the host of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart greatly trembled. And when Saul inquired of the LORD, the LORD answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets.
I Samuel 28:5-6
So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to inquire of it; and inquired not of the LORD: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse.
I Chronicles 10:13-14
Response
I Chronicles 10:13-14 does not say that Saul never inquired of the LORD, but that he inquired of one that had a familiar spirit instead of inquiring of the LORD. Yes, Saul inquired of the LORD once: but when God did not answer him (because of unconfessed sin in Saul’s life), Saul gave up and turned to witchcraft instead. God expects us to inquire of Him always, never to witchcraft.
