"What was the punishment for breaking the sabbath?" (Alleged Contradiction #E2356)
Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people.
Exodus 31:14
This verse seems to imply two contradictory punishments: death and exile. See also: Exodus 31:15, 35:2; Numbers 15:32-36

The punishment for breaking the sabbath was death. When someone is put to death, he is obviously cut off from among his people, and so Exodus 31:14 presents no contradiction.
