"How much gold, silver, and clothing did the people give?" (Alleged Contradiction #E6794)
They gave after their ability unto the treasure of the work threescore and one thousand drams of gold, and five thousand pound of silver, and one hundred priests’ garments.
Ezra 2:69
And some of the chief of the fathers gave unto the work. The Tirshatha gave to the treasure a thousand drams of gold, fifty basons, five hundred and thirty priests’ garments. And some of the chief of the fathers gave to the treasure of the work twenty thousand drams of gold, and two thousand and two hundred pound of silver. And that which the rest of the people gave was twenty thousand drams of gold, and two thousand pound of silver, and threescore and seven priests’ garments.
Nehemiah 7:70-72
Ezra | Nehemiah | |
---|---|---|
Gold | 61,000 drams | 1,000 + 20,000 + 20,000 = 61,000 drams |
Silver | 5,000 pound | 0 + 2,200 + 2,000 = 4,200 pound |
Priests’ garments | 100 | 530 + 0 + 67 = 597 |
Basons | — | 50 |
Response
It is possible that the extra priests’ garments (there were 597 total) were not needed and were sold for 800 units of silver. 1
