"Did Joshua remove the twelve stones from the Jordan River?" (Alleged Contradiction #E9105)
And Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests which bare the ark of the covenant stood: and they are there unto this day. … And those twelve stones, which they took out of Jordan, did Joshua pitch in Gilgal.
Joshua 4:9, 20
Response
Verse 20 is simply stating the location where Joshua pitched these twelve stones: in Gilgal. It does not say that Joshua moved them after they were erected; it simply states that the stones originally came out of the Jordan, which is stated in Joshua 4:8 as well. Thus, there is no contradiction: Joshua took the stones out of Jordan and erected them on the banks of the river at Gilgal.
