"Did Jesus bear witness of himself?" (Alleged Contradiction #E6637)
If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true. There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.
John 5:31-32
Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go. … And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me. … I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.
John 8:14, 16, 18
Response
In John 5:31-32, Jesus is saying that if He bore witness of Himself by Himself, it would not be true (this is why He said there was “another that beareth witness of me”). In John 8:14, Jesus said that He did bear witness of Himself, but not by Himself. Verses 16 and 18 make it clear that the Father bore witness of Him as well, and this was Jesus’ point.
