Response
Both the righteous and the wicked often suffer God’s physical punishment on a nation. However, the righteous will not suffer eternal death (or, “the second death”). Ezekiel 21:3, for instance, is speaking of temporal, physical death, as many of the prophets warned of other nations conquering Israel for their disobedience. Ezekiel 33:18-19, on the other hand, is speaking of eternal life and death. This is clear from the context; for instance, Ezekiel 33:9 states, “he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.” Ezekiel 18 parallels this portion of chapter 33 in many ways and states, “The soul that sinneth, it shall die.”
