"Did the eleven disciples believe the two men?" (Alleged Contradiction #E8409)
And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them, saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.
Luke 24:33-34
After that he appeared in another form unto two of them, as they walked, and went into the country. And they went and told it unto the residue: neither believed they them.
Mark 16:12-13
Since Jesus had appeared to Simon, doesn’t that mean the rest of the disciples would have believed the two men?
Response
Just because Jesus appeared to Simon does not guarantee that the other disciples would believe that Jesus had risen. After all, they didn’t believe when the women told them either. In fact, the Bible even says they “believed not for joy” (Luke 24:41) when Jesus was standing right there! Sometimes people do not believe, even when the evidence is so plain.
