"When did Absalom rebel against David?" (Alleged Contradiction #E4966)
And on this manner did Absalom to all Israel that came to the king for judgment: so Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel. And it came to pass after forty years, that Absalom said unto the king, I pray thee, let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed unto the LORD, in Hebron.
II Samuel 15:6-7
David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years.
II Samuel 5:4
Response
The forty years refers to the time from when David “won” the hearts of the Israelites (I Samuel 18:5) to the time when Absalom “stole” their hearts (II Samuel 15:6). 1
