"Was Abraham justified by faith or works?" (Alleged Contradiction #E9794)
For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.
Romans 4:2-3
Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
James 2:21-22
Response
Skeptics usually skip the rest of James 2:22 which explains how Abraham’s “faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect”. As Christians, we are saved by faith, not works; however, true faith produces visible evidence in works, and one who has no evidence of faith has no faith. Put another way, it is possible to have works without faith, but it is not possible to have faith that is not evidenced by works.
Abraham had true faith which evidenced itself in works.
