Response
There are a couple of possibilities:
- Jesus simply sat on a colt.
A colt can also be described as an ass, just like a kitten can be described as a cat (albeit a baby). The prophecy quoted in Matthew may be using poetic parallelism, describing a single creature as “an ass” and “a colt the foal of an ass,” which certainly could describe the same creature.
– - Jesus sat on an ass with its colt.
It is possible that Jesus used both animals to ride into Jerusalem: the mother and the colt.
