"Was Jonah swallowed by a fish or a whale?" (Alleged Contradiction #E7230)
Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
Jonah 1:17
For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale‘s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Matthew 12:40
Response
Why can’t a whale be considered a “great fish”? The modern animal classification system that we use today which states that a whale is not a fish had not even been invented at this time. Even today, we sometimes use the terms “fish” or “bird” in an every-day, non-scientific sense. For instance, we may sometimes call a bat a “bird,” though this may be incorrect in the context of our modern classification system.
