What did the sign over Jesus’ head say?

The sign was written in three languages: Greek, Latin, and Hebrew.  It is possible that the differences can be attributed to the differences rendered when the Romans translated the message into these three languages (no one said that the Roman soldiers doing the translation did a perfect job).  This would mean that Matthew and John were renditions of two separate languages (translated back into Greek by the gospel writers), and Mark/Luke are renditions of the third language.  The very subtle difference between Mark and Luke (“THE KING OF THE JEWS” vs. “THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS”) may be the result of the translation choices of Mark vs. Luke rendering the language back into Greek, since both mean exactly the same thing.
