"Should we pray for everyone?" (Alleged Contradiction #E8088)
I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; for kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
I Timothy 2:1-2
Therefore pray not thou for this people, neither lift up cry nor prayer for them, neither make intercession to me: for I will not hear thee. … Therefore pray not thou for this people, neither lift up a cry or prayer for them: for I will not hear them in the time that they cry unto me for their trouble.
Jeremiah 7:16; 11:14
Response
Yes, we are to pray for “all that are in authority.”
Jeremiah’s was a special case: God specifically told him that He would not listen. However, today, God commands us to pray for all in authority, since we do not know who is beyond hope and who isn’t. Since we do not know, we are to pray for everyone.
