Some verses teach capital punishment, such as Exodus 22:18; 32:27; Numbers 15:35; I Samuel 15:2-3; Ecclesiastes 3:1-3. However, other verses teach not to kill, such as Exodus 20:13; 23:7; Deuteronomy 5:17; Mark 10:19; Luke 18:20; and Matthew 19:18.
Response
We should not kill the “innocent and righteous” (Exodus 23:7). God commanded some people to kill for capital punishment or in wartime, but this is obviously not the same. For instance, in America we have laws against murder, but we also have capital punishment in many places. The Bible no more contains a contradiction than our modern laws do when allowing capital punishment for murder or other crimes or when going to war.
