Some verses state that the Holy Ghost was given after the resurrection of Jesus Christ: John 7:39, John 20:22, and Acts 2:1-4, for instance. However, others indicate that the Holy Ghost moved through people and filled them before the resurrection: Mark 12:36; Luke 1:15, 41, 67, 2:25; and Acts 1:16, for example. So was the Holy Ghost given before the resurrection or after?
Response
Although the Holy Ghost moved through and filled people before the resurrection, the Bible says that He was “given” after the resurrection. Believers before the resurrection of Jesus Christ did not have the Holy Spirit inside them in the same way that believers do today.
True New Testament Christians have an amazing gift of the Holy Ghost, which the Bible says is our “earnest of our inheritance.” In other words, God’s gift of the Holy Spirit’s indwelling is God’s “down payment” on His promise of eternity in Heaven (Ephesians 1:13-14).
