To explain, evolutionists are claiming that God should have created animals on these islands that best suit the environment there, rather than just placing animals on the island from the nearest continent. 1 2
Response
God did not create animals in their present locations. After the Flood, the animals on the Ark dispersed from the mountains of Ararat. Animals on a continent could reach nearby continental islands perhaps by land bridges (during an ice age after the Flood which would have reduced the height of the oceans) or by vegetation rafts.

Notes
- Coyne, 2009, p. 106: “[W]ith few exceptions, the animals and plants on oceanic islands are most similar to species found on the nearest mainland. This is true, for example, of the Galápagos Islands, whose species resemble those from the west coast of South America. The similarity can’t be explained by the argument that the islands and South America have similar habitats for divinely created species, because the Galápagos are dry, treeless, and volcanic–quite different from the lush tropics that dominate the Americas.” ↩
