Because the mountains were shorter at the time of the flood, there was plenty of water to cover them.
Earth contains 332,500,000 cubic miles of water. 1 If we flattened the entire earth, this much would cover it to a depth of just under 1.7 miles 2 3 4 Today, the tallest mountain is almost 5.5 miles tall, 5 and the deepest trench is over 6.8 miles at its deepest. 6 The Bible tells us water covered the tallest mountain at the time. 7
This tells us that the tallest mountains were shorter at the time of the flood and that the catastrophe caused the earth’s topology to change. 8 9 Thus, there was plenty of water to cover the tallest mountain during that time. 10
Ironically, some scientists (NASA) believe that there have been major floods on Mars where no known liquid water exists today. 11 Earth has plenty of water for a global flood, but the fact that the Bible teaches a global flood causes scientists to ignore the evidence for a global flood to avoid sounding like they believe the Bible.

In fact, if you sliced off the continents at sea level and dropped them into the ocean to make a smooth, uniform sphere, the ocean would still have an average depth of about eight thousand feet over the whole planet. This vast world ocean contains 325 million cubic miles of water, weighing over a million trillion tons.” ↩
- Palmer, 2011, p. 29: ” … the total volume of the oceans is immense (1.34 x 10^18 cubic m or 4.73 x 10^19 cubic ft). According to one estimate, if all the salts were extracted from ocean water and spread out over Earth’s entire surface, they would form a layer more than 150m (500ft) thick. Fresh water, meanwhile, amounts to 3.2 percent of the global total, with ice caps and glaciers comprising about 2 percent and ground water contributing around 1.1 percent. … The presence of fresh water, and its complex cycle of transfer between atmosphere, rocks and oceans, is also vital to the survival of all terrestrial life.” ↩
